|
|
This is the competition that our skaters will be competing at in their endeavours to qualify for the Olympics. Link to the website is below.
http://www.eislauf-union.de/NebelhornTrophy2009.html
Good luck to Cheltzie Lee, Danielle O'Brien and Gregory Merriman and Robert McNamara on their Olympic quests.
Also Allie Rout will be competing for New Zealand so good luck to her too.
If anyone has any reports of their performances that would be great.
Just for information, here is a list of countries that have already qualified spots in divisions and the number of remaining spots available for countries that haven't qualified.
http://sites.google.com/site/figu...gnotes/2010-olympic-qualification
Even though countries that have already qualified spots will be competing at Nebelhorn, it is those countries who haven't qualified that are fighting for the Olympic places. In singles there are 6 spots, in dance there are 5 and in pairs there are 4.

Yes this week. I hope our skaters can get the Olympics. I can't remember the last time we had a dance couple at the Olympics. It has been a while. Fingers crossed!
Good luck to them all. |

This has probably been the most difficult 36 hours Danielle and Greg have endured. Shortly after arriving in Oberstdorf Greg developed severe chest and shoulder pain, initially it was thought to be indigestion. Sadly it did not settle and Greg was taken to hospital where it was found he has pericarditis he spent some time in tne intensive care unit for monitoring and treatment with Greg and Danielle holding onto the hope that the inflammation would resolve enough for them to skate, sadly it hasn't and on medical advice they have withdrawn from the competition.
Greg has been moved from intensive care a little while ago but he remains in hospital. At this stage the focus is on getting Greg fully recovered so they can dance on toward 2014!
Our thanks go out to the assistance and support Danielle and Greg has received from Victor Kraatz, Mark Storton and Elizabeth Ryan.

Our hearts go out to Danielle and Greg. Cheltzie has kept me posted about Greg and we along with many others are in hopes of a speedy recovery!
They have all had a cry...practically the whole team as they ALL knew the possibilities! The good thing about it all is that Danielle and Greg KNOW that they ARE world class ice dancers and that 2014 is waiting for them! They're truly in our thoughts! |

Thought I would copy and paste this from FSU. It is the list of Ladies and their positions after the SP of the countries that are aiming for qualification. Top 6 placements make it through.
1. Julia SEBESTYEN HUN
2. Miriam ZIEGLER AUT
3. Yan LIU CHN
4. Teodora POSTIC SLO
5. Tamar KATZ ISR
6. Gwendoline DIDIER FRA
7. Isabelle PIEMAN BEL
8. Cheltzie LEE AUS
9. Chaochih LIU TPE
10. Nella SIMAOVA CZE
Plus the rest ....
Sonia LAFUENTE ESP
Anastasia GIMAZETDINOVA UZB
Karina JOHNSON DEN
Manouk GIJSMAN NED
Megan WILLIAMS STEWART PUR
Ana Cecilia CANTU MEX
Fleur MAXWELL LUX
Lejeanne MARAIS RSA
Joshi HELGESSON SWE
Eleonora VINNICHENKO UKR
Mericien VENZON PHI
Marina SEEH SRB
Alexandra ROUT NZL
Emma HAGIEVA AZE

Alessia BALDO BRA
Overall Cheltzie is in 13th place after the SP.
From the reports I read on FSU she skated really well, ending up with a total score of 42.34. Does anyone have any news?
Let's send some cheers overseas, best wishes for the LP and clinching that Olympic spot.

After an eventful week Danielle and Greg are on there way home for a break to give their bodies a chance to recover and a chance to regroup and plan their path onwards.
How disappointing for Cheltzie to be so close after the short but to finish 15th overall. Still she remains in with some hope of making the games if natural attrition causes some countries to withdraw
Well done Robert for putting together the best skate you could for this week.
While all 4 will inevidibly return home with their heads full of "what ifs" and "If onlys" sometimes our skaters show just how human they are and that no amount of training and preparation can prevent life happening and getting in the way of their dreams and hopes.
Best wishes to all 4 for the remainder of the international season. You have carried the hopes of the Australian Figure Skating community with pride and committment. |

Thank you to magic thinkin for acknowledging Robert. It has certainly been a difficult time for everyone this past week. Having the hopes and dreams of a nation riding on your shoulders is a huge ask for anyone, but add a few unexpected circumstances and priorities soon change.
I also want to wish Greg a speedy recovery. We are thinking of you and Danielle.
I have no doubt Cheltzie and Robert skated their best. Carole. |

Our young team at Nebelhorn certainly faced many challenges in Germany! I was only brought up to speed this week about the happenings in Germany.
I have to say I'm truly proud of our young team and I would have to say that the potential of our elite athletes...Danielle/Greg, Cheltzie etc looks extremely promising for 2014.
One of the rink mum's told me that Cheltzie too had many challenges and thus a true champion rises to the challenge. Cheltzie had several cortisone injections in her back a week and a half before the event and had to take time off to try and recover. The day before she left for Nebelhorn also tested positive for glandular fever AND some sort of blood disorder. Unbelieveable!!! Not sure it's true as her mum hasn't been around the rink to ask but it did come from a very reliable source!
If indeed this is the case....I'm in complete awe of her strength, determination and courage! She should be very proud of herself and look forward to a successful international season upon healing! As for Greg and Danielle, they mustn't beat themselves up over things beyond their control. We too as so VERY proud that they are representing Australia and home resting and regrouping for their promising season ahead! Robert did the best he could do on the day and I'm sure he is looking forward to a competitive international season also. WELL DONE our AUSSIE team! We're very proud of you all!
